What advice do you have for new teachers?
The advice I have for new teachers is over plan, so that way you aren't ever behind. Put your students needs before curriculum. You know whats best for them and how to teach them. Don't get discouraged with bad grades, kids are kids. Reteach and move on. Experiment! Be Creative try new things! Let your students see you make mistakes, YOU ARE HUMAN! Take mental health days when you are burnt out. Set grading times, DO NOT BRING HOME WORK EVERYDAY! Pass your passion for learning onto your students.

What actions can you take to remain a connected educator throughout your career?
I can stay connected by using social media to follow inspiring educators. I can go to teaching conferences to further my knowledge and stay up to date with the latest technology. I can also go to available PDs in my school district. My biggest goal for after induction is to introduce more creative projects that incorporate the art in language arts. I will make sure that every project we do my students also learn some aspect of art (learn how to draw an eye or body). I'll know that I've succeeded by looking back at each project to see that they have incorporated art in some way.
Looking at my initial and final CTSP, I've noticed that I've grown more confident when it comes to scaffolding and creating lessons that engage all students no matter their background. I've also become more comfortable and flexible when it comes to switching up lessons last minute or adding extra scaffolds to better fit each class.
Looking back at my goals, I think I've done a good job really honing in on my first three.
Standard 2: Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning 1) By spring of 2020, I will work on my classroom management by utilizing the reward system I have revamped for my classroom this year to help motivate and refocus students back to learning. I am continually using my class store as a reward system. Students get tickets throughout two weeks, then they can spend their tickets at my class store. I'm consistently updating the items I sell to keep their interest high. They love being able to buy cool things and this keeps them in check when it comes to homework, behavior, etc... Standard 4: Planning Instruction and Designing Learning experiences for All Students. 2) By spring of 2020, I will plan all instruction (for at least 2 weeks out) in my planner, making sure to include a wide range of activities that are scaffolded to my student’s needs. I've been really good this semester when it comes to having lessons planned at least two weeks in advance. I've also been able to have homework packets printed out ahead of time so I don't have to prepare things last minute. Standard 5: Assessing Student Learning 3) By spring of 2020, I will use the results of writing assessments (bi-weekly paragraphs) on a spreadsheet to see the growth of all students and use that information to help them reflect and grow from their mistakes. I've been really good at having my students consistently writing during 1st semester, but I haven't been on top of myself when it comes to using the rubric to consistently grade and keep a running record of their scores. Next year I will make sure to be more consistent. The following were my professional goals for this school year

Standard 6: Developing as a Professional Educator 5) By spring of 2020, I will provide extra supplemental materials (pamphlets, worksheets, etc..) in English and Spanish for parents to use at home to better understand and support students from at home. Standard 7: Student Progress towards the Attainment of Academic Standards. 6) By spring of 2020, I will use STAR reading and at least 2 writing assessments (slightly altered for paragraph writing) from the Houghton Mifflin Curriculum to assess my student’s progress of the academic standards. |
